Breve Presentación

Anna Albiach Serrano has a B. A. in Biology (5-year degree) from the Universitat de València (UV), Spain, and a PhD in Psychology from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Spain, where she obtained the "European Doctor" mention and the "Extraordinary Doctorate Award" from the School of Psychology (2011-2012). She completed her doctoral studies (under the supervision of Josep Call Balaguer and Fernando Colmenares Gil) and postdoctoral studies at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA) in Leipzig, Germany. There, she spent more than five years investigating the physical and social cognition of the great apes, including bonobos (Pan paniscus), chimpanzees (P. troglodytes), gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), orangutans (Pongo abelii) and humans (Homo sapiens). During this time, she established collaborations with overseas institutions like the Primate Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan, and the Konrad Lorenz Field Station, University of Vienna, Austria, where she made stays (3-months stay in Japan and 2.5-months stay in Austria) in order to carry studies on the cognition of two species of corvid (Corvus corax y C. corone) and Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), respectively. In the last years she has participated in two research projects funded through competitive calls of public entities. Also, within the field of comparative psychology, she has contributed 8 publications in international scientific journals of impact, 17 oral communications in national and international conferences and 15 oral communications presented in national and international centers as an invited speaker. In 2012 she joined the Faculty of Veterinary of the Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU, Valencia, Spain, first as a lecturer and since 2015 as an Associate Professor. There, she teaches Scientific Method, Zoology, Ethology, and Biodiversity and Environment, since 2015 she coordinates the subject Basic Sciences (which includes Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology), and since 2016 she coordinates the first year group of international students of Veterinary, among other tasks. Since 2014 she also gives lectures on Primates and Human Cognition (II) in the Master in Primatology of the University of Girona and the MONA foundations, and she is a member of the Research Board of the Spanish Primatological Association (APE). In addition, since 2016 she is a member of the Animal Care and Welfare Committee of the Oceanogràfic, València, Spain. At the moment, she carries out her research within the Unit of Ethology and Animal Welfare (UEBA), CEU, and the Study Group of Animal and Human Behavior (GECAH), UCM. Her main interest is the study of the cognitive processes underlying animal behavior. Particularly, she studies the evolution of cognition, which requires a comparative approach that consists on comparing the cognitive skills of species that are more or less closely related, in order to trace the evolution of their cognitive traits and determine the selective pressures that have made them possible. Within the field of physical cognition, she is mainly interested in tool use, causal knowledge, object permanence and spatial memory. Within the field of social cognition, she focuses on cooperation, helping and Theory of Mind. Finally, she also carries research on inhibitory control and innovation skills in the context of problem solving.
